Marvel Studios Is Reportedly Interested In Bringing THOR: RAGNAROK's Hela Back To The MCU

Cate Blanchett's Hela only made a single appearance in the MCU in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarök, but it sounds like Marvel Studios might be interested in doing more with the character...

Cate Blanchett made her MCU debut as Hela in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, and aside from early rumors that the character was set to appear in Love and Thunder, we've had no solid intel on the villain's potential MCU return.

Blanchett did return to voice the Queen of the Underworld for the second season of Disney+'s What If...?, but we may not have seen the last of the character in live-action.

In the latest Cosmic Circus Q&A, Alex Perez says he has heard that Marvel is interested "in bringing the character back, but I don’t think it’s for the Avengers movies. Maybe in Thor 5?"

Thor managed to defeat Hela (with a little help from Surtur) at the end of Ragnarök, but it's no easy thing to kill a god, so the character could quite easily be brought back without the need for much explanation.

Though there had been female villains in other Marvel Studios movies, Hela was the first major female baddie in the MCU, and certainly made an impression. Fans have been hoping to see her return to cause more problems for her half-brothers, but even if the studio does want to do more with the character, there's nothing to say that Blanchett would have any interest in revisiting the role.

The Academy Award-winner noted that Hela "looked pretty dead" when we last saw her, did also indicate that she might be tempted to suit-up again.

"There’s always a way back, but I’m sure there’s always a way forward, who knows? Sure. I never say no to anything," said the actress in a 2018 interview.

A fifth Thor movie has yet to be officially announced, but several different scoopers have claimed that the project is in the early stages of development. Even so, Chris Hemsworth recently prompted speculation that he may be preparing to bid farewell to the Asgardian hero by sharing the following message and video to his Instagram page.

"Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life," the actor wrote. "For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable... Next up, Doomsday!"

If Thor 5 does happen, would you like to see Hela return for another showdown with the God of Thunder?

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were recently hit with significant delays, with Doomsday now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.

Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who also make their MCU return after helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame

"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made. We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves”, said The Russos in a statement after the SDCC panel.

If she would be a part of Dooms evil Avengers I would dig it and if she was wielding molnjir that would be pretty dope and her and Thor could have a round 2

Bringing Hela back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would offer a wealth of narrative opportunities, especially since, in the original Marvel comics, she is not Thor’s sister but rather Loki’s daughter, which opens up new dynamics and storylines beyond what was explored in Thor: Ragnarok. Hela’s immense power and complex motivations make her a compelling character who could shift from a villainous role to a more nuanced or even heroic figure, much like what was teased in Marvel’s What If...? series, where she evolved into a Goddess of Peace. Her return could benefit Thor by challenging him in new ways, pushing his character growth, and potentially offering him an unexpected ally against larger threats, while also enriching the MCU’s roster of powerful female characters and adding depth to the mythological side of the universe. With Cate Blanchett’s acclaimed portrayal and the character’s enduring popularity, Hela’s comeback would not only excite fans but also provide the MCU with a versatile and formidable presence for future storylines. She's a badass....and should be brought back, but as loki daughter.

I would be down to see Hela in live action again tbh…

While she didn’t really have much depth to her as a character , that was superseded by Blanchett’s fun & vampy performance imo which made her an enjoyable villain to watch!!.

Thor 5 seems like the most likely option if it isn’t the Avengers films but we’ll see if this even comes to fruition.

They [frick]ed up the thor franchise but putting waititi in and making it too much about earth. Look at all the rich characters we missed from that part of the universe

@AllsNotGood - The Thor franchise has always had issues. The first film was a good origin story, but TDW was a mess. Ragnarok was actually great, but then Taika took all the wrong lessons forward when he made L&T and that was rubbish.

@AC1 - waititi ruined Thor. I mean he made a joke about mjonir giving him a handjob....this has no place in a thor film

An easy reason to bring her back would be if Thor 5 was at least partially set in Helheim since that's presumably where she'd end up when she died anyway.

It'd be interesting to see how she'd be used though - would she be antagonistic again, perhaps an obstacle keeping Thor trapped in Hel? Or would she maybe grow into a more nuanced character (like many of the gods in various mythologies who are often incredibly morally complex) and be something of a guide or ally to him? Perhaps even mirroring the earlier redemption arc seen in Loki's character, in turn enhancing Thor's own MCU arc as not only a brave warrior worthy of Mjolnir but also someone capable of inspiring others to better themselves as well.

@AC1 - I would prefer the latter since there was validity in her motivations which you could explore more…

Hell , you could use her as a way to further explore the children’s relationship to Odin and how that impacts Thor being a dad to Love etc.

Sure but don't bring her back from the dead. Just reboot and recast.

Although I'd prefer a villain we haven't had before like maybe Karnilla (with a Loki/Balder love triangle).

@RolandD - godawful shit of an adaptation.

Not the daughter of Loki, not the ruler of Niffleheim, not neutral, not soft-spoken, doesn't have half-dead look when she doesn't wear her cape.

The only thing Hela about her is the name and the antlers.
