David Corenswet Is "The Sexy New SUPERMAN" On PEOPLE Cover; Actor Talks Christopher Reeve Similarities

Superman star David Corenswet has graced the cover of PEOPLE Magazine, with the publication hailing the actor as the "Sexy New Superman." We also have comments from the actor and filmmaker James Gunn.

Creature Commandos gave us a taste of what's to come in the DCU last year, but Superman will be what launches DC Studios' DCEU reboot to the masses.

The marketing campaign is kicking into high gear now that we're less than a month away from the movie's release, and lead star David Corenswet is looking "sexy" on the cover of PEOPLE Magazine. It's a big publication that should bring even more eyes to Superman come July 11.

"He’s got all the charm and muscles a Superman needs," filmmaker James Gunn tells the site. "He has, as one friend said, 'such Superman face.' But he’s also an incredibly talented actor that could balance the dramatic chops and humor and naturalism and physicality the role calls for."

Corenswet has a fair bit in common with Superman: The Movie star Christopher Reeve; they both attended Juilliard and have a background in theatre. Reflecting on his time in the prestigious performing arts school, the Superman star remembered discussing Reeve with reverence.

"He was somebody who we talked about quite a lot as an alumni who was to be sort of admired and looked up to," the actor said before talking about the impact playing the Man of Steel has had on him. "People tell me I look like Superman, but don’t realize that I’m playing Superman."

Corenswet is a relative unknown in the grand scheme of Hollywood, but has impressed audiences with his work in Pearl and Twisters. Superman looks set to be his big break, though, and we're sure people will soon recognise him on the street as the new Clark Kent.

Gunn decided against bringing Justice League star Henry Cavill back as Superman, deciding instead to start fresh with an actor who has less baggage and can play a younger, less experienced version of this iconic character. When Superman begins, though, he'll have been protecting Metropolis for three years

As well as this cover, PEOPLE has shared a video interview with Corenswet. You can watch that below.

Superman, DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures.

In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

The movie stars David Corenswet in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Also appearing are Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Milly Alcock.

Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Imagine trying to do the right thing, and people still critique you. That's what the scene is about. You're a [frick]ing clown

@bobevanz @kylo0607 - It's not about whether or not he had a good point in the argument, it's about how he's arguing his point. Like an asshole, essentially. Shouting at her and standing over her as she sits calmly, asserting his ape-like dominance.

@ObserverIO - that's one way of looking at it. But she's also being overly proactive in the scene. She knows his secret.. She knows his struggle and he's literally just stopped a war and thousands of people dying... Yet she's harping on about him using 3rd person narrative. Get a grip woman and look at the big picture. And this also shows his human side.... People fly off the handle all the time. Everything's relative. 2 sides of a coin.

@HashTagSwagg - can’t cry that’s not comic accurate that has happened in books with different situations

@OptimusInTime - She's not gonna go easy on him just because he's her boyfriend. It's an interesting point that he talks about himself in the third person. She has a grip on the situation and everything she's doing as an interviewer. He has no grip.

Also it could be said that she is looking at the bigger picture. Unilateral authority has long been a very important theme in superhero comics. Superman and the Justice League cannot become Hyperion and the Squadron Supreme.

@ObserverIO - again... It's how you relate to the scene. This to me shows superman's human side. I get the Lois reporter side. I hear you there... But I'm team supes in the scene... You're obviously team Lois. A testament to the writing that no side is wrong in the argument.. Just how it relates to you.
But real talk... Man just stopped a war and saved lives... Go get me coffee instead of grilling me 🤣🤣🤣

@OptimusInTime - points well made but I do think Supe is so confident in who he is he’d be more likely to calm and casually argue his point with a smile.

That said, I’m all in to give this a film and Superman a chance.

Cool!!.

Everything we have seen from David so far makes me think he’ll be great in the role…

He’s bringing a lot of charm & sincerity to this version of the character which I think has been working well , atleast for me!!.

As skeptical as I am about this movie, I agree about Corenswet. He's physically almost a cross between Christopher Reeve and Tom Welling, which is a perfect Superman, IMO.

@JurassicClunge -

James Gunn's version of Superman is shaping up to be the weakest, whiniest, under powered iteration ever. Just from the trailers it seems as though Superman will:

HashTagSwagg - 6/18/2025, 11:46 AM
@Forthas - Hope to hell I'm wrong but so far it looks like Gunn is taking the Super part away from Superman, he's just a "man" and by man I mean a 30 year old dude behaving like a 20 year old who can't keep his emotions in check because his parents werent around, I can understand that for characters like Star Lord but this is suppose to be Superman, yet another deconstruction of a beloved hero.
Forthas
Forthas - 6/18/2025, 11:47 AM
@JurassicClunge - Funny you should state that! In that Rolling Stone article that the glazers are having orgasms over, Gunn said...

"I see the online things 'Who would beat whom?' — Homelander or Superman or f---ing whatever, Adam Warlock or Brightburn, and I’m like, 'This is the f---ing stupidest f---ing conversation.'"

Given that probably most people in Geek culture have these conversations, that means that James Gunn just called nerds culture stupid...yet what we get from the glazers is....

@HashTagSwagg - And that is just from about five minutes of trailer footage. I hope there is not more to come. I am not sure I would buy him as one of the leaders of the Justice League.
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 6/18/2025, 12:00 PM
@Forthas - I imagine Gunn's dynamic between the trinity will be Batman and Superman acting like over grown man babies arguing at each other, fighting over meaningless shit whilst Wonder Woman act as they're stand in mother pulling them by the ears and of course all 3 will be screaming at each other so the audience can have their haha moment.
Forthas
Forthas - 6/18/2025, 12:06 PM
@HashTagSwagg - Well I think i read somewhere that Supergirl will be one of the pillars of this new universe so it may be a quartet for some reason. But yeah, Wonder Woman and Super girl will wear the pants and have the bigger balls while Superman and Batman will yell at each other the whole time. What a mess it will be!

@kylo0607 - I'm pretty sure that 2nd shot of cavill is him cradling what's left of lois after Darkseid has toasted her with his omega beams and the first being after he was forced to kill the only remaining survivor of his home world.

Not the best example to use as Forthas is comparing it to Gunn's superman's childish outburst over being asked tough questions 😬😬

@Forthas - Lol, you're right, all these clips make him look like a 3 dimensional character. Why would they do this to him? Why on earth would you give Superman a personality or even attempt to make him endearing.
Imagine looking at a cute little dog in a cape and still deciding to hate on the movie. Clowns.
Forthas
Forthas - 6/18/2025, 3:48 PM
@kylo0607 - You are the one cherry picking scenes as though it proves a point. When both Lois Lane and the army questioned Cavill's Superman,he did not have an emotional breakdown. What you show are genuine moments which should exhibit an emotional response. Like @JurassicClunge states these are poor examples. You know very well they are not the same circumstances.
